Vocabulary of Space Space: “The interval, or measurable distance, between pre-established points or images. " ------- infinite space — objects can be seen receding into "endless" space. shallow space — a limited depth--only a slight distance back from the picture plane. intuitive space — created "instinctively" by manipulating, overlapping, transparency, interpenetration, inclined planes, disproportionate scale, fractional representation, and the art elements. ------- two-dimensional space — possessing the dimensions of height and width (essentially flat like the picture plane). three-dimensional space — has the dimension of depth in addition to height and width or their illusion. four-dimensional space — a treatment that gives a sense of depth, height, width, and time or motion. ------- Perspective systems: perspective — any graphic system used in creating the illusion of three- dimensional images and spatial relationships (see atmospheric, linear, and projection systems). atmospheric (aerial) perspective — the illusion of deep space produced by graying value, neutralizing colors, and blurring objects as they recede (i.e., a foggy day). linear perspective (geometric) — a system in which diminishing scale is regulated by converging parallel lines extending to vanishing points on the horizon line. oblique projection (perspective) — a mechanical drawing system which presents a frontal view of an object. Side planes are drawn as parallels coming off the front plane at a 45-degree angle. isometric projection (perspective) — a mechanical system presenting a corner view-the leading edge is a vertical; horizontals are drawn (left and right) at a thirty degree angle from the vertical. orthographic drawing — a mechanical drawing of two-dimensional views showing a plane, vertical elevations, and/or a section. ------- fractional representation — different views combined in the object (face/side, eyes/front). interpenetration — the movement of planes, objects, or shapes through each other. transparency — a distant image or element seen through a nearer one. ------- plastic space — (1) the use of the elements to create the illusion of depth, the third dimension on a two–dimensional surface; ( 2) space created by three-dimensional art forms such as architecture, sculpture, ceramics, etc. decorative space — features the essential flatness of the space (surface) which may also be ornamented or enriched.
